Highs, lows and role models.
Your Club Update
December 4, 2019

December! Sure that's pratically Christmas

It's kinda crazy that we're into December, and there's still results to be talking about. By now, you should be thinking of where to buy the turkey, not who to put in at corner-back, but there we have it. There's not too much by way of fixtures, but enough to be talking about when if comes to results.
if you want something included in the club notes, all you have to do is drop me a mail at pro@stvincentsgaa.ie.

20x20, Can't See Can't Be

You may or may not be aware of the 20x20 campaign. It's a campaign to increase awareness, coverage and participation in women's sports. The aim is to have 20% of all sports coverage to be for womens sport in Ireland by 2020. The slogan is "Can't see can't be" meaning that if a young girl can't see heroes and role models in sport, they'll struggle to become a future role model themselves. Drop out rates in sport for teenage girls tends to be high, and the campaign aims to reduce this.
At St Vincents, we have a strong womens section, and we have seen great success at both Juvenile and Adult levels as anyone who reads this newsletter will be aware of. This week in particular saw a couple of things that re-inforced this message

Let's start with congratulations to our Minor Camogie Team. Last year's win in division 2 meant our minors were graded in division 1 for this year. Whilst they didn't get the overall title, they did come away with the shield. Well done girls!

Next, we have to thank our Senior Camogie team, who brought their Leinster and Dublin Cups down to the girls mini leagues. A prime exmaple of giving younger players future heroes to apire to.

And topping it off, Team of the Month: U10 Girls

Team of the month is not just about on-the-pitch achievements, but is also awarded to teams who we feel epitomises club spirit. Anyone who was at the Camogie finals (Dublin, and both Leinsters) will not have missed the constant chanting and support from the stands. The U10 team have been steadfast in their support, including making well-wishing videos and being vocal at the games.  Pictured here are the U10 team, mentors, members of the Senior Camogie squad, and Bank of Ireland branch manager, Tom Moran who funds our team of the month prizes. The U10 team got €200 worth of first touch sliotars thanks to Bank of Ireland.

The Junior Hurlers march on!

Our Junior Hurlers took the long trip to Kileedy GAA in Limerick to contest the Junior B Leinster Semi-Final against Rathnure last weekend.  A convincing win on a score line of 2-18 to 2-10 means they're through to the Junior B Leinster Final.  This is down for 4th January also in Killeedy GAA.  If ever a competition looks like some craic it's this one. Head over to their Facebook Page where you'll find posts including Shane Kiernan getting his man of the match award, and a certain Nollaig Drumgoole treating the locals to his dulcid tones.
Thanks to everyone who supported through their "guess the score" fundraiser. The winner was sold by Caelan O M and the winner was Chris Weaffer €200
2nd prize sold by Kevin Drumgoole - Padraig Connors took €100
Joint 3rd sold by Neil H (Caoimhin O' Tuathail) and Shane O' N - Ciaran Duggan get €40 each

Juvenile End of Season - This Saturday

The Juvenile end-of-season event is this Saturday in the club hall, commencing at 4:00pm.  Any teams with wins this year will receive their medals.  Each squad will also award a player of the year, chosen my the team's mentors. This is always a great event for players, mentors and family. We look forward to seeing you there.

Highs and Lows for the Lads

Well done to the U21 football team. They beat Lucan on a score of 2-13 to 0-15 in the Semi-Final of the U21 B Champtionship. So, its on to the B Championship final. I'll let you know when its on.
Commiserations to the U16 footballers who were defeated in the U16 A Football championship final last Saturday. Its an amazing achievement to make it to the top of the U16A grade, but no words can describe the hurt of such a loss. Sport can be tough. Your club is proud of you, and the juvenile section's loss will be the minor's gain. We look forward to your exploits next year.
Finally, well done to the U15 hurlers, who were crowned division 2 champions last weekend!

Are you a recent "drifter" ?

Did you or one of your family used to play for Vincents? As we start to consider the new season, we're looking to reach out to anyone who's drifted away in recent times. We know how it feels, the longer you leave it, the more it may feel like it is difficult to return. But we want you back! We're always looking to add numbers to our teams, and we welcome newcomers, and people who've drifted away alike. If you know anyone who needs a nudge, please let them know they'd be welcome back. If you want to return, drop me a mail, and i'll make sure the correct mentor gets in touch.

This Weekend's Fixtures

There's only 4 games down this weekend, let's give them all a mention
Juvenile Boys
Our U8 and U9s are having their own blitz against one another on Saturday afternoon. Thats on PNU2 at 12:15.
This is followed by out U13s, who are playing two challenge games beginning at 1:30pm also on PNU2.
Sunday morning sees our U15s in action against Na Fianna.  That thows in at 11:30 am on PNU2
Adult Football
This has to be my pick of the bunch this weekend.  Friday sees a St Vincents Over 40s team take on an over 40s St Margarets team this Friday at 8pm on PNU2. I only heard about this through a chance encounter with one of the players this morning, who described it as "a bit of craic, we'll pull a few calves and go for a couple of pints after". Indeed.  That plan sounds like it'll go out the window as soon as their first hard tackle goes in.  Best of luck lads.

And finally..

Normally, I like to end on a light note, but I received this message from Jack Gannon, U15 player and felt it was worthy of a mention.
"Hello, My name is Jack and I play for the U15 team. A family friend is raising money to go to Thailand for cancer treatment. It costs €200000 and we are raising money on a go fund me page and I would be grateful if you could add this link to the newsletter."

Thanks for getting in touch Jack. Of course, great idea.

If you'd like to donate to Jack's family friend, head on over to her gofundme page.
