Official notice of the club AGM was issued by our Runaí, Anne Harrington. The notice can be downloaded here. Due to restrictions on gatherings, the AGM will be held online. To facilitate this, if you'd like to attend, please register your interest at this link. Details on how to access the meeting will be issued a day or two before the event. Note: The link to register will close on Tuesday 10 November at 6:00pm. We'll need time to ensure all registrants are members, and to arrange and send out invited with the meeting link.
Also: Good question asked of me earlier this evening: What time is it on at? 8pm. That's the time.

Inter-county action last weekend

Hard luck to Dublin Hurlers last weekend. Looks like we couldn't break Cork's winning spell against Dublin in the hurling championship. A six point loss (Dublin 0-22, Cork 1-23) ends Dublin's run in the hurling this year. Hard luck Conor and Riain.
The Dublin Footballers were successful, beating Westmeath by 11 points (Dublin 0-22, Westmeath 0-11) in the Leinster SFC quarter final. Their next game is the Leinster SFC semi-final. It's on this Sunday with throw-in at 3:30pm. This one is on in an empty Croke Park. It is being screened on RTÉ NewsNow. (Huh?).
For those who aren't aware, RTÉ do actually have a news channel. You'll get it on the Saorview (Channel 21), on the web at https://www.rte.ie/news/player/live/7/, on Sky on Channel 521 and on Virgin on channel 200. Eir also carry it on channel 517. Remember folks, there's no back doors this year; its full on champo from here on in. A knockout means you're out. Like Kerry last week for example.
The ladies footballers beat Waterford by 4 points (Dublin 0-17, Waterford 1-10). This books them a place in the All-Ireland semi final. That game isn't until the 28th, against the winners of Mayo v Armagh.

The county board issued their juvenile update last Friday, with word that all competitions for the rest of the year (bar U16) are not going to be played. Full statement here. Effectively, there will be no scheduling of games in 2020. The U16 Hurling championship was at Semi final stage, and the plan is to see that out early in the new year:
"The position of the sixteen outstanding U16 competitions* which are at Semi-Final or Final stages is similar to that taken by the Adult CCC concerning outstanding Minor competitions. The remaining games will be scheduled from 17th January 2021 subject to Government and Croke Park guidelines in place at that time and also subject to Dublin's Minor Hurling Inter-County Championship commitments which may impact some Club U16 Teams."
Unfortunately, this is confirmation that the schedule mess that is 2020, will spill over into 2021. For example: Féile will be held at U15 next year. I've no idea what this means from here on in, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some updated thinking on this in the future.

Each year, as we get towards the end of the season, we always end up with a number of mentor and manager places to fill; This occurs at juvenile and adult teams, for both boys and girls. Filling these positions is often left to games directors to ask individuals if they would consider a role. So, how about we turn this around for once?
Maybe you've finished playing in the last couple of years and are missing those days. Or perhaps, you coached at juvenile and hadn't considered taking an adult team? Maybe you haven't thought about it in in many years. Well, now is your time! If you think you'd like to help out with a team drop me a mail and I'll ensure that the correct games director gets in touch to discuss options.

End of Year Charity Appeal
|

Last year, we had a very successful charity push in the form of donations of clothes and food to Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH). With social distancing, we're not going to be able to do this; instead we are going to appeal to our members to consider a donation to ICCH's online funding drive. I'll get the details and put them out in next week's newsletter.

One for the younger members - Virtual Santa Experience
|

I'm sure the younger children are starting to worry about they are going to get their messages to Santa this year. One local entrpreneur has thought of this and is helping santa set up visits right from your home, via Zoom. Fantastic idea. Each booking will also result in a donation to your local club, so if you're planning a visit, do tell them St Vincents sent ya! Full details at Santa's EGrotto

Return to Play Portal Acting Up?

I had a number of people let me know that the Return to Play portal had issues this week. The GAA are in the process of adding features, and this has caused some screwups temporary instability. I've reported to the operators of the system, and they assured me it should be ok now, but if you do encounter an issue send me your login username to pro@stvincentsgaa.ie, and I'll raise specific tickets.
I'm aware that if you have 2 people from the same family to declare, this was causing issues. The support team tell me that the portal now has a family feature, and if you are declaring on behalf of more than one person, you should first create a family within the page, and declare them from there.
There's two guiding principals to bear in mind:
1.The GAA describe the responsibility associated with Covid guidelines is a shared one. So, its not "on" anyone if there's issues. There isn't a club "Covid Officer". Essentially, it is everyone's responsibilty to do the right thing with regard to declarations and tracing.
2. They also acknowledge the volunteer nature of the association; so the work we do in regard to Covid track and trace is described as "best efforts".
In short - if the system is down, we ask mentors and covid-supervisors to ensure they make alternative arrangements. My sons U14 for example, switched to requesting declaration changes to be sent privately via whatsapp for one session last week. This is sensible, and allowed for training to continue and tracing was still able to be done by paper. Thanks to the U14 mentors for thinking on their feet, and indeed to all mentors who had to do some work-arounds this week.

A shout out to the Senior Football team, in an initiaitve led by selector Sean L'Estrange . Work has begun on preparing the Gym for return. The place has been cleaned out, and repainted last weekend (thanks for Eddie and Sean Lambe!). With the senior footballers vitually tag teaming (to keep numbers down, and socially distancing in place) over the course of the day.
Next weekend sees new celing tiles and updated lighting going in. The senior team will also begin a fundraiser in the next week or two to raise funds to modernise some of the equipment; I'll have more details soon.
The current before and after photos already show great improvement.

Senior Football selector Sean L'Estrange is obviously still as fit as ever. I mean, he looks like he's working hard, but not a bead of sweat in sight. Great to see that even his work gear is on-brand.
But seriously - well done on rallying the team to knock the gym into shape.
