Well. Last week, I wrote a short set of notes, complaining about lockdown and the lack of things to talk about. I hit the send button, put the links out on social media and sat back, feeling happy to have made something out of a slow news week.
About 5 minutes later, my son came from upstairs and said "Well, what about Diarmo?"
"Huh?"
Slow. News. Day. Indeed.
In Covid news, Monday saw an announcement we really didn't want. A suspension of all club games. All ages, all levels, until further notice. If you missed it, here's the GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association's statements.

So, the lotto Draw was held on Monday, but I don't have the numbers at time of writing. Blame an internet outage at the club office. I promise to have the numbers in next week's notes.

Club Gear Ordering - Now fully online
|

As mentioned last week, we'd normally arrange a club gear night where you can get your orders in. People come in their droves, try on gear and put their orders in. Unfortunately, we can't facilitate this, so McKeever, who supply our traning and leisure wear have set up a dedicated page to order all available gear.
This page will be live for 10 days to collect orders, after which manufacturing will begin. So, you've got from now until 17th October. GO!

Commiserations to Junior 2s
|

Hard luck to the Junior 2s who were narrowly beaten in the Junior G Hurling Championship final last Sunday by Thomas Davis. The rain was pummeling down, and no spectators were allowed. Them's tough conditions. Well done for making it to the final.

The intermediate hurlers won their Cup Final last Sunday defeating Naomh Olaf on a scoreline of 5-18 to 0-12. Well done lads!

Like I say, the metaphorical ink wasn't dry on last week's club notes, when news of Diarmuid Connolly's retirement from Inter-County football broke.
The plaudits have been coming in all week. All of our major news outlets wrote their pieces on Diarmo's career in the sky blue. Giants of the game have been full of praise
Eamonn Fitzmaurice called him "the complete half forward".
The Irish times said Diarmuid was guilty of "breaking the borders of footballing genius".
Tomás Ó Se, to my mind one of the most balanced GAA pundits out there said there was "an element of Cantona" about Diarmuid.
Colm O'Rourke wrote that "Diarmuid Connolly leaves with a bag of gold medals - and he earned every one
Pat Spillane calls Diarmo "..one of the best footballers in the modern era" (although, when he said it, I bet he said "modren" 😂)
I could go on, there's been many column inches dedicated to Diarmuid in the last week.
But...indulge me for a second. Allow me to speak as a Gaelic Football Fan; A Vincents Fan and a Dublin Fan.
Here's some of my favourite memories:
In 2011, I couldn't make the semi-final. A family event meant I had to sit that one out. I remember the family in a mobile home in Wexford, crowded around a TV as Diarmo put on a exhibition of Football against Tyrone. Then there's "take a deep breath, put it in the corner and walk away". How about winning that late free against Mayo, and Diarmuid telling his team mates to calm down, with a confident smile on his face? Or the local business event in the club, where he posed for photos with my kids. I could rattle on about the Monaghan quarter-final which clashed with a wedding: I'm at a wedding of two people from Naomh Barróg getting married. In a pub full of Barrógs, I drew Diarmo for the first goal....and won the pot. There's the joy of watching pure skill: holding off your man with one arm, and still catching a sky high pass with the other. We shouldn't forget Coolio! Who can forget Coolio? Oh, and the pass to Ciaran Kilkenny. That Pass! What a pass (and then doing it again against Clontarf!) There's the tweet from a guy who said that you "stormed off after a game", and you didn't needs words in your response. And more recently, during lockdown, a skills video that made curling it off your left or curling it off your right look....easy.
And of course, St Patrick's Day 2014. A club united. A walk from Pairc Naomh Uinsionn to Páirc an Chrócaigh. Our reward ? A super team display, and a individual tally of 2-05 that will be remembered for manys a year.
We're just glad the retirement is from inter-county, and wish you continued success as a proud Vincents man.

I was sent this photo of the Junior 2s after their game last Sunday. Looks like neither the weather nor the result dampened their spirits. It came with with a single line
"A brilliant picture which really sums up this team"
I couldn't have said it better myself.
