Another first for the Adult Ladies Footballers

We open with news that our Adult Ladies Footballers won their first bit of silverware tonight. Well done girls who won the Go Ahead Junior G Shield this evening when they defeated O'Toole's in Blunden Drive.  Congratulations to the players and mentors. Tonight is just the beginning, and here's to many more trophies for the cabinet!

Just a couple of small items to cover this evening, and as always, keep an eye on social channels (Instagram, Twitter and Facebook)
if you want something included in the club notes, all you have to do is drop me a mail at pro@stvincentsgaa.ie.

Lotto

The was no lotto held this week, due to Monday being a bank holiday.  Next draw is next Monday.

Did you know that the prize fund sits at €8,000?  That'd be a tidy sum to pick up!

Champo Watch

Right, here goes. With my usual disclaimer:  If I miss anything, please don't hesitate to drop me a line.  Champo watch involves collating information from a number of sources, so there can be the odd mistake made*.

Ladies Football
Well, we opened this weeks notes with the news the Adult Ladies footballers won their Junior G Shield.  I'm told there's a couple more competitions to run yet, so while their (current) championship campaign comes to an end, there's plenty more ball to be played this year yet.

Mens Football
This weekend sees the start of the Football championships.
Our Senior Footballers open their Senior 2 Championship game against St Mary's Saggart. This game is at home this Saturday 6th of August at 6:30pm. I'm sure you'll be all out to watch this one. I'm away the weekend myself, so if anyone wants to volunteer to give me half time and full time updates, I'll try my best to get them out on the social channels.

At the same date and time,(6th August, 6:30pm) the Intermediate Footballers meet Skerries Harps.
The following day (This Sunday, 7th August) sees our Junior A Footballers take on St Oliver Plunkett Eoghan Ruadh (11:00 am), away in Martin Savage Park.
Later that day (this Sunday 7th August), 3:00pm, the Junior B Footballers open their campaign when they meet Round Towers, Clondalkin at home on PNU.

* A shout out to Junior B Hurling mentor, Frank Brady who was in touch after last weeks notes went out.  I had erroneously said that the Junior F championship game was on 14th August.  It is in fact on on 12th August.  I'll remind you all next week on Hurling championship fixtures, but let this serve as proof that mistakes can be made, and indeed errata are welcomed! Thanks Frank!

Summer Camps come to an end

A massive thanks to Kevin and Vanessa Golden, who aided by our new GPO Shane O'Grady, took it upon themselves to run this year's summer camp.  Two weeks with over 150 children in attendance is no mean feat.  Kevin and Vanessa pulled in many favours - so thanks also to those club members who helped out throughout the week, as well as the club stars who showed up and did some drills with the kids.
I'll be casting the net in a week or two as we set up for the mini-leagues 2022 season, hopefully, these great camps will helps us attract our next group of future stars.

Volunteers Day

I think I'll keep this one in the club notes, right up to the actual day (and here's hoping for a report on the great work afterwards too!)
Come down to the club to join our "volunteer day" on August 20. This is a morning were we get as many people down to the club to tackle small jobs around the place.  We'll do minor repairs, cleaning, painting and generally make the place look a little better.  Members of all ages are welcome to come down; we'll find a job for everyone.  If you have a particular skill, or work somewhere where the business may be able to donate materials, etc. please get in touch.

Newsletter details

And finally..

We received a lovely piece in the mail from a Mr Con Clarke this week.  It was accompanied with a short note that read

"Secretary,
I enclose a receipt which Rev Fr Fitzpatrick passed on to me many years ago. I am sending it to you as I feel it is better in St Vincents' archives. It was the first cheque issued for St Vincents Hurleys.
Mise Le Meas
Con Clarke"

There's no mention of how many Hurleys were bought, but 12 pounds in 1942 sounds like a lot of money to me.  Let's do some nerding out on this shall we?

There were 20 shillings to a pound. So the amount in 1942, 12 Pounds and three shillings was 12 pounds and 15 pence.
We know that at 1 January 2022, the exchange rate from Euro to Irish point was fixed at €1 = £0.787564. or to convert the other way, £1 = €1.269.

So, imagine in 1942. The Euro Existed. £12.15 = €15.43. That's my reckoning on what Fr Fitzpatrick paid in Euro.

Well, according to the Consumer Price index, inflation from October 1942 to June 2022 was a whopping 3870.4%, meaning if forking out today, Father Fitzgerald would be buying €612.63 worth of hurleys!

Fair play Father Fitzpatrick. Nowadays, we make players buy their own hurleys, and that €612 would probably be going towards footing an electricity bill.
Progress? I'm not so sure.
