| We're coming up on another bank holiday weekend |
|
|
|
---|
|
| It's a fairly quiet weekend on the competitive games front but made up with a busy Sunday for the Brian and Sean Mullins event and a busy Monday for our bank holiday events. We have a couple of things in store for the bank holiday event so mams and dads may want to take note. |

| | Brian and Sean Mullins memorial event |
| We hope to see a big contingent down in Portlaoise GAA this weekend. We'll be honouring the memory of Brian and Sean Mullins with challenge matches: The U14 Ladies' footballers will play Portlaoise Ladies' footballers at 2:00 pm. The Senior Hurlers will take on Portlaoise Senior Hurlers at 3:30 pm, and the Senior Footballers will take on Portlaoise Senior Hurlers at 5:00 pm. It promises to be a great event. |
| | | I've been mentioning the June Bank Holiday Tournaments for the last couple of weeks now, but here are four things you may want to know about: Cake Sale in aid of next year's Féile boys There will be a cake sale for the duration of the tournaments. This is being organised by the U14 Boys to raise funds for their Féile competition next year. Grab a cake - pay very reasonable prices, and support the boys - what more could you want? Maybe you prefer savoury? Like the May Bank holiday tournaments, we'll have on-site BBQ for kids, mams, and dads alike to get stuck into! Kiddies Disco A DJ will be on-site for the day, and he'll be running a kiddies' disco immediately after the tournaments. If the weather is good, it'll be outdoors. If not, we'll take it in to the club hall. Old Clothes Collection In conjunction with "New Life For Clothes", we'll be accepting donations of your hand-me-down clothes. Want to clear out that wardrobe? Simply bring those clothes to the club on Monday, and we'll take them off your hands. You can bring re-wearable, good-condition items, which can include all gendered clothing and children’s clothing, accessories (handbags, belts, hats etc), and shoes in pairs. We cannot accept any bed linen/bed sheets/duvets etc. |
| | Full details in the poster below - please note registration times, and we'll see you all on Monday! |
| | Jungle Challenge 2023 - Tickets and Sponsorships are now on sale |
| The big "Jungle Challenge" fundraiser for the Adult Camogie Session is now on sale. Here's all you need to know: - The event will take place on Saturday 17th June 2023.
- Tickets for the event are available at https://vins.ie/jungle23
- Each player is looking for sponsorship:
- Corporate sponsorship is €250. This will designate the player as "Sponsored by <YOUR GENEROUS COMPANY HERE>"
- Individual sponsorship. The amount given is at your own discretion
- There are also "Challenge Sponsorships" available. If you want your company to be named as responsible for one of the challenges this can also be purchased at the above link.
Corporate Sponsors: This can be purchased online at the above link, and once purchased, the organising team will be in touch to get the information they may need to give you a relevant shout-out. When you purchase a sponsorship, you'll be asked which contestant you are purchasing for at check out. Similarly, if you purchase individual sponsorship, you will be asked which contestant it is for at check out. Please note that sponsorship is not an attendance ticket - If you would like to come along on the night, please purchase a "General Admission" Ticket. Last on Challenge sponsorships: I'm sorry, I don't know what the challenges will be, so can't help you there. I'm taking part you see, and I think they are keeping us in the dark about the challenges. (My guess is this is a good idea) |

| Two good results in juvenile ladies football |
| Well done to the U14 girls who went unbeaten in football all season - they've secured promotion from Division 3 to Division 2. A similar feat for the U15 Girls. Their season isn't over, but they cannot be caught, and have secured promotion from Division 4 to Division 3. Great news - and it's showing great progression in our ladies' football section! Well done to the teams and mentors. |
| | | Speaking of female athletes: Here's a book you may be interested in |
| We congratulate Laura Kealy who has been doing nutrition work with the Camogie teams for the last year - She's just released her book "EAT TO WIN" which is aimed squarely at female athletes. Its tagline is "Nutrition for Peak Performance in Female Team Sport Athletes". Looks like the launch went well, because most bookshops are reporting out of stock. You can pre-order at Easons and Bookshop.org has it in stock in their UK shop. |
| Inter-County Representation |
| News just in: Well done to Harry Curley, Leo Sweeney, Ciaran O'Connor and Sean Keogh, who are Leinster Minor Champions! They are pictured here with Club member Stephen Keane who provides S&C coaching to the minors. This was taken just after their win over Kildare in the Leinster football final this evening in Portlaoise. Final score was 0-19 to 2-8 |
| | Congratulations also to Ava Curry and Ellie Curley who lined out for Dublin in a U14 camogie game against Kilkenny last Saturday. That one ended in a draw. Well done girls: I'm sure we'll be hearing all about you in the near future! |
| | The Griffith Avenue Mile Returns! |
| We're delighted to see another outing for the Griffith Avenue Mile. We had great representation from all of our teams last year, including our all starts who took part. Here's hoping we'll see them this year in their new All-Stars jerseys! The event will take place on September 17th. For those of you who'd like to enter, entries are on sale at this link. Mentors: If you want to enter as a group, the organisers can help: You can fill out details on their contact form, or email info@griffithavenuemile.ie |
| | | So, how did last week go? At a glance, last week wasn't a great one. Adult Men Two football results came in from this evening, at time of writing: The seniors were beaten by Castleknock 0-17 to 2-8. The intermediates were also beaten, narrowly by Skerries Harps: 1-10 to 1-9 Last night, the Junior footballers beat Sylvesters 1-8 to 2-10. The weekend was a hurling one: Junior B hurlers lost to Kilmacud (3-15 to 2-8) Junior A hurlers lost to Erins Isle (0-13 to 3-6) Intermediate Hurlers lost to Na Fianna (2-19 to 1-6) And the senior hurlers were narrowly beaten, also by Na Fianna : 1-19 (22) to 3-15 (24) Minor Minor A were beaten by Cuala 1-21 to 1-12 Minor B had a win over Castleknock: 3-14 (23) to 5-5 (20). Minor C's game was a walkover - It looks like St Peters have withdrawn from the league. Adult Camogie There were no adult or minor camogie games last weekend. Ladies Football Monday saw our Minor A's have a convincing win over Lucan: 5-14 to 3-8, while last Friday saw our Minor B suffer a heavy defeat to Na Fianna. |
| | There's very few games scheduled for this weekend - An U11 Camogie game on Saturday, and a U14 Camogie game on Sunday (best of luck folks!) The Adult Ladies B team take on Man O'War on Bank Holiday Monday at 7:30 on PNU2. With no games - you've no excuse not to head down to Portlaoise! |

| | From the "I'll-probably-be-lynched-for-this" department: At the start of the academic year last year, the juvenile sections strongly encouraged transition-year students to take a more active role in the club. Both the boys and girls of TY 2023 have stepped up, helping with Saturday morning mini-leagues, and Friday's All-Star sessions. Tonight was the last night of transition year for the boys in Ard Scoil. In typical teenage fashion, they decided to take one teacher's suggestion that they should "dress nice" as literally as they could. The school tie, one presumes was straight out of Mr O'Connor's English lesson on irony. |

| Congratulations to all our members who finished TY. A special shout-out to Rónán O'Neill, who also picked up "TY Student of the Year (Heaney)". |
