The return of the bank-holiday juvenile tournaments!

We're coming up on the May bank holiday, and one great piece of news is the return of the juvenile May-Day tournaments after a 2 year haitus. We have a high profile departure 😢, and a couple of mid-week senior games next week to look out for.

As always, keep an eye on social channels (Instagram, Twitter and Facebook)
if you want something included in the club notes, all you have to do is drop me a mail at pro@stvincentsgaa.ie.

Lotto

Lotto draw, 25 April, 2022.  Jackpot was €7,450.  Numbers drawn were:
16, 9, 6, 2
There was no Jackpot winner.  Winner of weekly prize of €100 was Aoife Drumgoole.  Have no fear folks, that'll be back behind the bar in a round of shots quicker than you can say "15 baby guinnesses for the camogie girls"
Next week's Jackpot will be €7,600

Traditional Music night - Saturday May 7

The intermediate hurling and football teams have come together to organise a night of traditional music in the club bar.  It's on Saturday 7th May from 9pm in the club bar.  Tickets are €12 and all proceeds are going towards funding the Intermediate Hurling and Football teams.  If you want to grab a ticket you can do so here.
Hint: If you speak to any intermediate hurler or footballer, they may be able to give you a discount code for €2 off the entry fee!

Féile Last Weekend

Hard luck to our U15 girls who put in a valiant effort in Féile last weekend.  They had 1 win in 3 which wasn't enough to see them through to the semis.  Sport can be tough some time, and Féile can give you that first taste of how tough it can be.  Reports are that the team did their families and the club proud.  Well done girls.

Meanwhile, I hear congratulations are in order for the U15 B team who won their Division 8 Féile Final. Well done to the team, and congratulations to the mentors too.

And as if winning Féile wasn't enough..

The U15B lads contest a Féile hurling shield final this weekend - best of luck lads.  They will then go on to do a darkness into light walk on 7th May in support of Pieta house.  Gotta hand it to those lads.  If you want to support their walk, you can do so here

The GAA National Club Draw - Tickets at the bar

The GAA run a national club draw each year.  It's an interesting fund raiser for the club.  Here's why:
  1. Tickets are just €10.
  2. The prizes are good! The top prize is a car.
  3. All money raised by the sale of tickets remains with the club.
  4. There's also prizes on offer for the club too.
Tickets are available in the club bar; But we recognise that some people cannot get up to the club bar, so we've devised a plan for those who'd like to purchase a ticket online:
For those who want to - you can purchase a ticket online here.
When you make a purchase, we'll fill out a physical ticket on your behalf and enter it into the draw.
We'll keep your stub for safe keeping in the club office.

The return of the May-Day Juvenile Tournaments

I'm delighted to be able to announce the return of the annual Paddy Donnelly and Aoife McGrane-King Tournaments.
These are long-standing tournaments that have been cancelled the last two years due to Covid-19, so it's great that they are back.
For those of you who don't remember:
The tournaments are for children aged U8 to U12.
Teams are picked to ensure mixed capability, so all games should be enjoyable but competitive
There's no soloing or pick ups - ground hurling only, which ensures the younger members have every bit of influence as the older children.
Goalkeepers are from U10,11,12 only.

The big focus on the day is about an enjoyable day of Hurling/Camogie.
If you child is U8 to U12, simply turn up before 12!

Also: As a bonus, the U14 team will have a cake sale on the day, and will not only offer home baked goodies, but also ice-cream, crepes, tea and coffee.  I might head down to watcht the hurlnom om nomnomnom nom.

Remembering Paddy Donnelly and Aoife McGrane-King

Paddy Donnelly encapsulated what is most remarkable and most cherished about the GAA. He was an ordinary man who became remarkable through Gaelic games. He was at the centre of community and family in a way that is hardly possible in the parts that the GAA doesn't reach. He was at the front of the great wave of talent which came roaring out of the curiously symmetrical Marino estate which was the Vincent's catchment area for so long. His specialty was hurling, and he was a beautiful player, a minor
All-Ireland winner in 1945 and a senior runner-up in the All-Ireland of 1948. He was the club's star hurler, then a mentor and manager for a long time of good senior hurling teams; he managed the county team for a while in the 1960s, he wrote a history of the club to mark its 50th anniversary in 1981, and when he passed away it was as president of St Vincent's.
Aoife McGrane-King was the daughter of Lisa King and (Senior Hurler) Mossy McGrane. A fun-loving bundle of joy who was lost to illness when just a toddler. When initially diagnosed with a rare cancer, the GAA community got behind fundraising efforts to have pioneering surgery in the USA, but unfortunaltely, it was considered to dangerous.  Aoife fought a long and very brave fight that lasted fourteen months - she survived longer than doctors said she would and that showed the spirit that was in her – a spirit she has obviously inherited from her parents and family. She brought people together to unite in their attempts to help her and, although her life was brief, she has left an indelible mark on all who knew her. The club were only too pleased to be asked to have a competition in her name which has run since 2009.

Summer Disco!

This is going to be..tropic!
We're running a Summer Disco.  Yep. You heard that right.  A disco*. Saturday 28th May will see us having a monster summer disco in the club main hall, with radio DJ Phil Cawley.

* For those of you who don't know what a disco is.  This is how people of teenage years used to meet and socialise, long before internet, iPhones, Social networks, Netflix (with or without chlling), I'll try to explain:
To listen to music, you didn't ask Siri or Alexa for any tune you want.  Instead, you attended the disco and listened to whatever the DJ chose to put on. The closest to "on demand" was heading up and shouting requests into the DJ's ear "CAN YOU PLAY A BIT OF SKA?".  The DJ would nod and then ignore your request.
Meeting someone wasn't a matter of swiping left (or is it right? I don't know).  It was a matter of seeing someone you liked and...get this...going up and talking to them.
To help this process, the DJ would, during the evening "slow things down" and play the "slow set".  The slow set meant guys had to walk up to a girl and ask them to dance with them; This dance was an embrace, where you essentially drifted around in circles, and made small talk by shouting into each other's ears over Madonna's "Crazy for you". (This dance was known as "going for a lurch").
Guys: If you were lucky enough to get her number, when you called it, it was like russian roulette.  The phone was typically on the end of a cable, in the hall in a house. When you rang it, the girl you lurched with might answer, but equally, her da might, or her ma. Or god forbid, her brother who is in the year ahead of you.

I don't think I'm selling this well. This will be a blast.  Tickets are now on sale at https://vins.ie/disco. All proceeds are going to fund our ladies football section.  Dust off your dancing shoes, get thatr flek suit cleaned, and come relive your days of discoing in Davids, The Oasis, The Grove, Bubbles, the Apartments.

The end of an era

From the "bitter, but still sweet" department I give you news that this weekend will be our last with GPO Emma Byrne.  Bitter, because we're losing her, sweet, because Emma is progressing in her career, and that is so well deserved.
Emma joined as GPO six years ago, and has really embraced everything a GPO is meant to be. In my short time as PRO, I cannot single out any other person who has received as many plaudits as Emma has.  Those of you who have read recent annual reports, will notice that her name appears many times; always in positive terms - thanks have come from mentors, games directors, and chairmen consistently. It doesn't stop there - we've had praise from players, parents, teachers, and head teachers.
Emma has brought an enthusiasm to the job, that has never wavered - If you've ever had the pleasure of watching her at a training session or mini leagues, you'll see her energy is as high at the end of the session as it was in at the beginning; and it shows - the kids love it, and love her.
Emma has always gone beyond the call of duty - not simply liaising with schools, but has helped create our long term athletic development plan; she has run fitness studies with numerous teams, and was a key trainer for our recent all stars group.  It doesn't stop there - she ran mini leagues over Teams all through the pandemic, assisted cameo appearences by the easter bunny, gave a lecture on statistics to our mentors and streamed our senior games when supporters couldn't attend.
Emma moves on to a role in GAA HQ, and their gain is our loss. From everyone at CLG Naomh Uinsionn I'd like to thank Emma, and wish her all the best in her new role.

Ladies football round up

Well done to the adult ladies team who won their encounter earlier in the week against St Brigids, but commiserations to the Minor B ladies who were beaten by Na Fianna.

This weekend's action

A somewhat quiet weekend, but both the footballers and Camogie teams are in action mid next week.
Next Tuesday sees the return of Senior Camogie, after a week's break. The girls take on Ballyboden at home; throw in is at 7:30pm.

The next day, Wednesday the senior footballers will take on St Judes; this is also at home, with a slightly earlier start of 7:15.  The footballers, will be dusting themselves off after a loss to Thomas Davis last weekend (1-7 to 1-13)

No senior hurling until 15 May.  The hurlers had a good win against (current Dublin hurling champions) Kilmacud Crokes last weekend (2-16 to 1-13).
While the Adult fixtures are a few days away, that doesn't mean you can't get out. Plenty of juvenile games on this weekend, and don't forget the May Day tournaments in the club. Details of all fixtures are on the club fixtures page.
