Club Notes, 26th January 2022

All teams back already

I've dropped the young fella down to training a couple of evenings this week and was pleasantly surprised by the activity.  Full car parks, and every floodlight in the place blasting out lumens. Great to see the life around the club. Unless of course, you're the treasurer looking at the price of diesel, and knowing the jenny is doing overtime, wha?
Oh, yea, most of the covid-19 restrictions are fully lifted.  (I really probably should have led with that). Monumentous! Amazing!  I'll give you what that means for us below.
Games aren't up and running just yet, but I see a few teams are starting some challenge matches; That's usually managers blowing out the cobwebs, so we tend not to publicise these. I'll talk fixtures once actual competitions come back.
Mini leagues come back this weekend, so it's all go!

As always, keep an eye on social channels (Instagram, Twitter and Facebook)
if you want something included in the club notes, all you have to do is drop me a mail at pro@stvincentsgaa.ie.

AGM Concluded - Meet your new chairwoman

Last Thursday saw the conclusion of the adjourned 2021 AGM, and the voting in of a new executive committee.  While the committee retains the majority of the outgoing team, there are a couple of changes; one of which is being finalised.  I'll announce the full executive in due course.
In the meantime, I'd like to introduce you all to the new Chairwoman of CLG Naomh Uinsionn, Una Barrett.

Una hails from Derry and by day works in asset management. Her involvement in the club began like many, by bringing her children to training and games. In recent years, she has given over her time to the club by getting involved in fund raising through working on the Oscars. Una's husband, Garry Finnegan is a mentor at U14 and U19, and her two boys both line out for Vincents in both hurling and football.
As if that's not enough, Una is also the assistant coach of the Republic of Ireland Senior Netball Team.
I'm sure you'll join me in wishing Una well in her new role with the club.

Our thanks to our outgoing Chairman, Conor Dignam

As he hands over the reins to Una, we owe a debt of gratitude to outgoing chairman Conor Dignam. Conor has served on the executive in some capacity for over 8 years, having previously held the postion of Juvenile Games director, and Chairman.  He steered the club though the difficult time of the Covid-19 pandemic, and leaves his position with the club in as good a place as ever.
And, he's not gone! Conor has remained active, playing junior B football in recent years, and was part of the management team for last year's U16, who won both league and championship in their divisions. Conor will continue to manage the team, as it now enters the new U17 grade.
We thank Conor for his contributions to the club and his ongoing volunteerism.

Return of mini leagues

Mini leagues returns this Saturday morning.  10:30 start as always.  If you want to sign up a child who hasn't attended before - please do! Just drop down a little earlier (10-15 minutes early should do it). Mini leagues is for children aged 5-7; We find it best if your child has started school as by then they are used to taking a little instruction.

Membership is now Due

Membership for the 2022 year is now due.  You should have received a mail which will provide you with a link to renew.  If you use your unique renewal link, it will duplicate your membership from last year, and there won't be a need to fill out all of the family details again!
We thank those who already jumped on and renewed.
If you don't have a renewal mail, let me know and I'll arrange one.  For those of you beginning a new membership this year, you can purchase a membership online at https://vins.ie/membership.

We're still looking for bar volunteers

The club are delighted that we were able to re-open the bar as covid restrictions began to lift.  This was thanks to a group of people who offerred to staff the bar on a volunteer basis.  The team are now looking for a few more volunteers, to share the workload a little.  From Richie Conway:
"We are looking to recruit more bar volunteers. Can you help us out?
We generally do our rota on a weekly basis, and the volunteer team have not only been crucial to the bar being open regularly, but we have managed to do it posively from a financial point of view, maintaining regular consistent friendly service!
It is great fun, and there's a fantastic bunch of people there already.  If you feel you might be able to help out at all, please get in touch, and we will be only too happy to welcome you to the team.  We have a lot of exciting plans and the volunteer team will be crucial to making these a success!"

Social Plans!

I mentioned this last week, but in case you missed it, see below for upcoming social events.
There are a number of social gatherings being organised - All of course subject to covid restrictions. Here's some things you can be on the lookout for in the first half of 2022:
Rounders (18 March).
It is with some glee that we hear the government has announced March 18 a once-off bank holiday this year.  We plan on running a family rounders competition.
This is just a bit of fun, and a chance to enter a team of mates, family members, partners, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, brothers and sisters, cousins, neighbours, grannys, grandads all welcome!! Your team, your call.
We support each other from the sidelines, or carpark or viewing areas all year round, why not put a team together for one day and have a laugh? God knows we all deserve it!
There are no age restrictions so any age diversity in your team won't matter to us, as long as you show up, play, and enjoy the day! We will be using the real Rounders bats, and rules, no hurls/tennis rackets, chair legs or feet or hands to strike the ball!
As this is a social event we are hoping covid restrictions will allow for us to enjoy a full days fun and enjoyment in our own club; all going well we'll have a trad/ballad session in the bar afterwards.

Darts Nights
A dartboard has been acquired.  It has been fitted.  Now all we need is teams.  Watch this space.  We begin with an internal competition, but who knows, maybe some of you will end up representing Vincents on the pub dart circuit!

Pool Competition
Yes.  That table that you've left your shot glasses on. The one that acts as a spot prize stage for every quiz we've ever had. That's an actual pool table.  Word on the street it that a company are coming in to restore it to its former glory.  When this happens, a pool league will start up.  Again, watch this space.

And that's not all - The bar volunteer team have plans for regular quizzes (where teams can book in, and use the night for team fund-raisers), Karaoke, and other yet-to-be-announced nights. Could you be the next "Vincent's Voice"? How about "Naomh Uinsionn's got talent" ?  the world is our oyster!

Return to Croke Park!

This week, Facebook threw up a memory on my feed from 2 years ago.  It was 25 January 2020, going to the Dublin Football league opener against Kerry. I've one more of Croke park a couple of weeks later; 22 February 2020; Dublin V Donegal.  And, after that, my photo reel goes all into zoom calls and sourdough images - a sure sign of the pandemic if ever there was one.
And this all comes to an end this weekend.  The Dubs are back, the season tickets are back operational, and we get to cheer on the county this Saturday in Croker.  Can't wait to get back!
Tickets are on general sale from this link (may require you to set up a ticketmaster account)

The end of the water break

Can I get a "good riddance"?  I've lost count the number of games that turned completely on a water break, and I certainly can't remember the last time it was used to drink water. It had degraded into a team talk, and I haven't met a single fan who had a good thing to say about it. I believe it was well intended, and necessary during the pandemic, but I'm sure I won't be the only one who'll be glad to see the back of it.
"Water breaks Counties and Clubs should note that the provision for Water Breaks in our games is now removed from our Match Regulations with immediate effect."

Mentors and back room teams: I'd highly recommend reading that update from the GAA.  It clarifies in detail the role of the Maor Uisce, including use of bibs, what they are allowed and not allowed to do, and the consequences of any infractions.

RTÉ Looking for people for a panel show pilot

From the "let's-hang-our-dirty-washing-in-public" department, RTÉ have put out a casting call for the pilot of a new panel show they are making.  This one sounds kinda fun I have to admit.  If you're a redditor, this has serious AITA vibes about it.  Could be a bit of craic. Details below.

And finally..

As if filling our own mentor teams wasn't hard enough, I give you a shout out from London.  I was sent a lovely message from user @aprillouisejune on Instagram.  She said:

"Hi just wondering if you can help
I play for a camogie team based in London in goodmaynes east London called Thomas Mccurtains and my passion for camogie started with st Vincent’s from the ages of 6-19.
Just wondering if you know any former players still looking to play camogie living in London or even better yet to go into management.
"

Now, admittedly, this is a long shot, but I'm sure we have the odd London reader.  Better still, I'm sure there's many a reader who have GAA-loving friends in London who you may be able to put in touch. Looking at their website, they look to be very active. I'm told they field a Junior and Senior Camogie team and last year got to the *ahem* All-Britain final. I also hear that their players come from all over Ireland, and Dubs are in a minority.  Can you help?
