| | | Winter Fundraiser - Great Success | |
| Well done to John McConnell and Risteárd Brennan, who organised the winter fundraiser. It was a big success; But I'll hand over to them: A fundraising day was held last Friday in aid of Saint Vincent de Paul Marino Conference (SVP) and the St. Vincent’s Juvenile Section. The day was a huge success and the chief organisers John McConnell and Risteárd Brennan wish to express their sincere thanks to the many sponsors (including our main sponsors AIG and ACCPRO), the donators (be they big or small), those who submitted prizes and auction items, the u10 boys’ management team for various tasks performed, Cathal Fallon, Dermot (PRO), Richie and the bar staff team, and to the numerous other helpers across the both The Golf Classic and Night of Entertainment. Our sponsor wall is a who's who of the parish and club and had some late additions in the form of C&T Superstore, Market Fair and Brannigans Pub & Kitchen. |
| | | |
| The day started at 7.54 AM with the first of the 39-golf team teeing off in Clontarf Golf Club (GC). Each team had their photo taken and had plenty of goodies to nibble on and drinks to keep them hydrated during their round. Thanks to Centra Collins Avenue, Dublin Meat Company, and Ishka Water. The golfers also had some food in Clontarf GC and further “refreshments” before joining us in the club hall for our golf presentation. Our esteemed Club President Mr Mickey Whelan was on hand for the prize giving to the teams in first, second and third place, and to our longest drive and nearest the pin winners. It must be said that any congratulations to our winning team were reduced as the night went on! For any queries in this regard, please ask winning team member Ciaran ‘Dinky’ Donohoe what his handicap was on the day versus his ‘normal’ handicap! An asterisk has been added to this win. |
| | | |
| Post the presentation, live music and the DJ kicked in. The hall was transformed for the night with special furniture, lights, LED dance floor and particular crowd favourites in the gin bar (Jackford), Prosecco Van (The Fizz Bizz) and bottle bar. Let’s just say we haven’t seen certain dance moves ever before in the club hall! We also had 2 raffles with some exceptional prizes. Thanks to the juvenile teams for selling their tickets and to those who bought other tickets on the night. The auction was a huge success and was closed via online bidding and a few late phone calls on the night! |
| | | |
| In terms of funds raised, some sizeable donations will be made to SVP and the juvenile section, and these will be fully confirmed over the near future. Lastly, it was great to see so many in the club on the night where many caught up with each other and for some had their first night out in the club. There were plenty of sore heads on Saturday morning!! PS: Watch this space for details of next year’s events. 1st Place: Ciaran Donohoe, John Calvert, Ciaran MacCriostail, and Mark Brady 2nd Place: Phil Gray & Co representing Palmerstown House 3rd Place: The Kiernans! John, Garret, Ian, and Shane.
Longest Drive: Ciaran MacCriostail Nearest the pin: Philip Coburn |
| | Race Night, 25th November - In aid of the U13s | |
| We're not done with events in the club mind. This Friday sees a social night in aid of the U13s in the form of a race night. Should be more craic. |

| Here's a leftfield request: Anyone have any scaffolding boards? |
| Vice-chairman Ciarán Barr has been doing mammoth work on pitches, drainage, and more. He's now building a mini workshop out the back sheds and asked me to put out a request: does anyone have any spare scaffolding boards lying around? He only needs a couple. Apparently, safety standards have changed and these are no longer in use on building sites, so there could be loads around the place. If you can help, please drop Ciaran a mail. |
| GAA4MAs: Socialising and Recruiting |
| The Gaelic 4 Mothers and others (GAA4Mas) are holding a social evening in the club bar on December 3rd from 8pm. This evening is open to all past and present players and is also open to future players. Could this be you? To join GAA4Mas all you have to be is female, 25 or over, not playing for a club or county. It strongly emphasises fun, keeping fit and having an active part in the club. The games are non-competitive and so even if you're a complete novice, you'd be welcome. There is no upper age limit. More information on the GAA4MAs is available on their webpage on the club website. If you have any questions, you can drop Michelle Whelan an email at gaa4mas@stvincentsgaa.ie |
| | U19s take the “B” Hurling Championship | |
| In the first of our good-news championship action from last week, we congratulate our U19 Hurlers who won the U19 “B” Hurling championship last weekend. The game was a very close affair against Commercials (who, famously are a dedicated Hurling and Camogie club). The final score was, as they say, by the slimmest of margins: 2-13 (19) to 1-15 (18) I was briefly speaking to mentor Liam Peel over the weekend and noticed that there wasn't a nail left on his fingers, and I hear the defibrillator was put on standby. |
| | | |
| A special shout out too to Rory Dunne, who had dual honours in scoring the winning point, and being nominated man of the match. |
| | ..and the Camog's take Leinster | |
| | | |
| A massive crowd headed to Carlow to watch the Leinster final against Oulart The Ballagh. Oulart are a formidable side, having featured in the last two All-Ireland finals (winning in 2020), and a big test was expected (and received). The game was high-tempo and physical from the get-go, and we started well. Although we led from the start, the game remained very tight. A goal from Niamh Hetherton in the 22nd minute brought some breathing space, and by half-time, we were leading by 4 points (1-4 to 0-3). Nobody expected it to be easy and Oulart came back out all guns blazing, but each time they scored, we seemed to have an answer, and while they came within a point they never got the equalizer. The 4th official announced 4 minutes of extra time and the crowd were in a frenzy for those minutes, which seemed to drag on. Oulart had a number of attacks during this time, but our backs handled everything thrown at them, as they had all afternoon; The ref blew up in the 66th minute, with a final score of 1-9 to 0-11. It couldn't have been closer. Well done to the team and management for a mammoth win. Our own Gráinne McKinney took some amazing shots of the game. They are posted on Facebook here. iLivePhotos were on hand, and you can view their gallery here. Jerome Quinn streamed the game for Leinster Camogie. His Twitter page has a number of interviews from after the game. He's done a nice cut from interviewing player-of-the-match Áine Woods to some of the on-field action. I have to say, I'm disappointed I didn't get front and centre for the team pic, but I'm happy with this one that captures the mood |

| | We're really close to the end of champo watch. So, apart from the two games above, what else have we got? Unfortunately, it's commiserations to the U16 Hurlers who were defeated in the U16 “A” Hurling final at home against Kilmacud Crokes. Another classic game of Hurling, this one. It'll be remembered as epic. There was nothing between the sides, and even with 6 minutes of extra time played the game ended all square at 2-18 a piece. Towards the end of this game, the heavens opened and the conditions were tough on both sides. cold, wet, driving rain and winds, and two teams going at it like gladiators. Lads on both sides were going down due to cramp. At the end of the first period of extra time, the sides were level again (3-21 to 2-24), but in the final period of extra time was to be Crokes with them having a purple patch. The game finished 3-28 to 3-22, in a scoreline that both sides would say wasn't reflective of the full story. I know this is little commiseration, but this was one of the finest displays of juvenile hurling we've witnessed, and we take our hats off to this fine team and congratulate the mentor team and players on a cracking outing they have had. Juvenile's loss will be minor's gain, and we look forward to continuing to support them for more years. Commiserations also the U16 B, who were up against St Kevin's last weekend, and lost on a scoreline of 1-5 to 1-13. Is this the end of champo watch for this year? Nope. The U16 B team play their final hurling game of the season. They are in the “C” championship and this is being played as a round-robin competition. While they aren't in the running for a place, every game counts so, we wish them well in their final Hurling game as juveniles. They take on Skerries on PNU2 at 2:00 pm on Saturday. Let's get out and give them big support! The U19 Football championship is still going - there was some postponed games, which has drawn out the calendar too, so we've also got this weekend: The U19 A team who are playing in the U19 “B” semi-final against Raheny. That's on Sunday Morning (27th) at 11:00 in St Anne's. The U19 B team who are playing in the U19 “D” quarter-final. They head out to Mobhi Road to take on Na Fianna. This is also on Sunday morning at 11:00. Choices, choices. As always, the support makes a real difference, so if you have a bit of time on Sunday morning, why not head along. But wait. There's one more thing. Winning Leinster means the Camogie team have now to go on to the next stage: The All-Ireland semi-final. This has been fixed for Saturday 10th December at 1:00 pm. They game will be played in Coralstown Kinnegad GAA. Don't worry, I'll keep the reminders going for this one. |

| | | Going back to the subject of the U19 win, I was given this bit of trivia by the U19 management group: History in the making: The U19 grade was brought in just this year. So, right now, this team are the first team in the club to win an Under 19 championship. All signs are also pointing to reverting to the minor grade as we knew it (U18, 2-year cycle). Should this happen, I guess they'll then become the ONLY teams in the club's history to win an U19 championship ever. Stick that one in your quiz-books, folks. It's probably why they skulled vodka and blackcurrant like it was going out of fashion partied so hard on Sunday. |
