Club Notes, 20th April 2022

Kate Moran, RIP

We open this week with great sadness, as we've learned of the sudden passing of Galway Camogie player Kate Moran, who died tragically following an incident at a camogie game on Easter Monday. There won't be a GAA person in the country who isn't shocked by this terrible news. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the Moran Family, Athenry and Ardrahan GAA clubs, the local wider community and Galway Camogie. We extend our deepest sympathies from all at CLG Naomh Uinsionn.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

Easter came and went

I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break. The instas were full of people enjoying far flung places and not so far flug places. Easter eggs and chocolate galore.
I'm assuming not so for the senior football and hurlers, who are both in action this weekend.  Senior Camogie don't play next Tuesday; a well deserved break I'm sure, after a convincing win over Kilmacud Crokes yesterday.

As always, keep an eye on social channels (Instagram, Twitter and Facebook)
if you want something included in the club notes, all you have to do is drop me a mail at pro@stvincentsgaa.ie.

Lotto

No lotto draw on Easter Monday.  Them's the rules.

Next week's Jackpot will be €7,450

Nutrition Talk by Dr. Brendan Egan

Last chance! Over 100 people attending - This Saturday morning.  "The importance of Nutrition" talk will take place on Saturday 23rd April at 11:00 in the main club hall.  It will be given by Dr Brendan Egan, Associate Professor of Sport and Exercise Physiology, and Deputy Head of School, in the School of Health and Human Performance at Dublin City University.  Dr Egan plays senior football with St Vincents and has kindly offered to give this talk.
Folks: Brendan gave a similar talk some years back, which I was lucky enough to attend.  I'd highly recommend it; it's very informative, and casual;   He gives a good overview of the need for good nutrition, as well as easy to follow tips on improving your diet. His talk is aimed at juvenile players but parents are encouraged to come along too.  The talk is open to all members of the club.
Places are free, but limited, so if you'd like to secure a place - nab a ticket here.

Traditional Music night - Saturday May 7

The intermediate hurling and football teams have come together to organise a night of traditional music in the club bar.  It's on Saturday 7th May from 9pm in the club bar.  Tickets are €12 and all proceeds are going towards funding the Intermediate Hurling and Football teams.  If you want to grab a ticket you can do so here.
Hint: If you speak to any intermediate hurler or footballer, they may be able to give you a discount code for €2 off the entry fee!

Inter county appearances

Plenty more inter county appearances for club members:
Well done to Paul Reynolds-Hand and James Brady who represented Dublin this evening in the Leinster Minor Football championship.  That's 3 wins from 3 as Dublin beat Westmeath on a scoreline of 2-14 to 0-11.
Last Thursday saw Kalem O'Brien, Bill Costello and Andy Smith get named for the U20 squad (who also took on Westmeath); They were also victorious on a scoreline of 1-15 to 1-10.
Conor Burke lined out for Dublin in the Senior Hurling Championship opener against Laois last weekend - another win (1-20 to 2:15).
And we had 5 lads line out for Dublin U16 against Wexford in the Celtic challenge: Sean Keogh, Harry Curley, Ronan O'Neill, Ryan Murphy and Ciaran O'Connor.  Both of these teams produced convincing wins too!

Any spare Hurleys lying around?

If the answer is "yes", the U9 Camogie team have put out a call for 28" hurleys.  Perhaps your child has out grown theirs, and it's just lying in the way in the shed/playroom/back garden, etc.
If you want rid of it, drop a mail to Claire McDonnell and she'll arrange collection.

The GAA National Club Draw - Tickets at the bar

The GAA run a national club draw each year.  It's an interesting fund raiser for the club.  Here's why:
  1. Tickets are just €10.
  2. The prizes are good! The top prize is a car.
  3. All money raised by the sale of tickets remains with the club.
  4. There's also prizes on offer for the club too.
Tickets are available in the club bar; But we recognise that some people cannot get up to the club bar, so we've devised a plan for those who'd like to purchase a ticket online:
For those who want to - you can purchase a ticket online here.
When you make a purchase, we'll fill out a physical ticket on your behalf and enter it into the draw.
We'll keep your stub for safe keeping in the club office.

Hamstring Research - Can you help?

Trinity MSc Student, Rasmus Hartmann was in touch to say " did you know hamstring strain is the most frequent injury among a lot of field sports including soccer, gaelic football and rugby, and some track and field disciplines, including sprinting and hurdles?"
I did not know this.
He goes on to say that he's work on research into hamstring injuries that he hopes will ultimately find a better exercise to prevent and reduce the rate of hamstring injuries.
Rasmus is looking for people to take part in the study.  The criteria are:
  • Males track-and-field or field-sports athletes aged 18-35
  • With no previous hamstring injury in the last 6 months
Full details are in the enclosed flyer.  If you think you can take part, drop a mail to Rasmus

MIE - No Parking

Club members are reminded that parking in MIE is not permitted for St Vincents events.  If you are attending training or a match in MIE, we ask all members to use the main club car park.  Even better - if you live near by why not walk or cycle to events there instead?  The facilities in MIE are very graciously provided by the Institute, for which we are truly greatful.  We owe it to our neighbours to respect their wishes.

This weekend's action

No shortage of games to lend your support to - and a very full weekend ahead.  Tomorrow, Thursday sees both Intermediate Camogie Teams in action.  Saturday is a big juvenile day with 17 fixtures down. As always, check our fixtures page for whats on.
